Lina Peterson Jewellery - craft textiles meet industrial processes

There’s always been something really intriguing about Lina Peterson Jewellery – perhaps it’s the way that she fuses different materials together, including plastics, resins, felts and metals, or the imagery she uses (if imagery is the right word to use – perhaps it’s more doodles than imagery?) that conjures up such a specific creative dream land which make her jewellery pieces instantly recognisable.
I think perhaps more than any of these things, it’s that Lina’s jewellery ignores the constraints of modern, recognisable jewellery styles, which make her jewellery more akin to minature sculptures or objects that just happen to be wearable.
One of the main draws for us at Ysh London is her innovative use of textiles in amongst all of her different technologically advanced materials which immediately remove connotations of craft, and seem to drive the possiblities of textiles forward a notch or two.
With pieces such as her gorgeous ‘Embroidered Brooch’ which use gold-plated copper and a delicately stitched textile, ‘Orange Necklace’ which fuses fabric with painted wood and beads, and ‘Collaged Brooch’ which features foam, textiles, and dip-coated metal in lemon yellow, Lina Peterson Jewellery treads a fine line between materials more normally associated with industrial processes and materials often ignored in contemporary jewellery.
Lina began her creative career on a Foundation course in Art & Design at the London Guildhall University, before going on to study Three Dimensional Crafts at the University of Brighton. After having achieved great success on graduation, winning the New Designer Association of Contemporary Jewellery Award, and as a runner up in the Jewellers Design Junior, Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Awards, Lina went on to hone her craft at the prestigious Royal College of Art’s MA Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery course.
Since graduating, Lina has undertaken various teaching posts, including the ReachOut programme at the RCA, as a visiting lecturer at the University of the Creative Arts Farnham, Glasgow School of Art and even as far flung as the King Saud University & The Art & Skills Institute, in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia!
For Spring/Summer 2009, Lina took on a commission for New York brand Ports 1961, who showed her collection of jewellery on the runway.

Lina continues to develop her collections alongside teaching, and has plentiful stockists around the globe, the majority of which are UK and USA based – from London and Cornwall based galleries to Washington DC, Chicago and Seattle.
We at ysh London are hoping to interview Lina about her jewellery for our ‘designer of the month’ in the coming new year – so watch this space!
